Who we are

Here you can find out more about our history and the structure of our organisation. You can also watch the documentary ‘Finding Hope Home’ to find out more about us.

Our story

Lucy Njoki Ndegwa, herself a mother of four, also made it her mission to help orphans on the streets of Nairobi. During her visits, she took time for the children and provided them with food. In 1996, six children followed her and spent Christmas at her home in Gathiga. None of them wanted to go back to the streets. Word spread quickly and gradually more and more children joined them. A permanent structure was urgently needed - the Gathiga Children's Hope Home was born. After just a few years, Lucy moved out with her family to leave the property solely for the use of the orphanage. In 2002, volunteers were able to visit the Hope Home in Gathiga for the first time thanks to Mary and Julian's initiative and provide direct support on site. In the summer of 2009, founding members Antje and Andrej independently became aware of the Hope Home in Gathiga through a social network and spent several weeks there in the autumn of the same year.

On 14 November 2009, Antje, Andrej, Mary and Julian, supported by friends and family, founded the Children's Hope Home e.V. in Wiesbaden. In late summer 2010, the Ebenezer Home in Kihara was founded with the support of the Children's Hope Home e.V.. The home cared for children affected by the HI virus, but unfortunately had to close in 2017. In August 2017, the Keys Academy was opened in Gilgil, a community centre that combines educational work with children and young people. The Key's Academy had to move in 2021 and is currently being rebuilt on a new site.

Our organisation

In Germany

The association is based in Wiesbaden, where we are registered in the register of associations. Different members of the association are responsible for public relations, the administration of donations and the volunteers. We all know the projects from our own experience and have a personal connection to Lucy and the children and young people. We carry out our charitable work at Children's Hope Home e.V. on a voluntary basis. The donations are collected in a German account and can be easily and safely disposed of in Kenya

Here you can find the addresses of contact persons in Germany.

In Kenya

In Gathiga and Gilgil, Lucy and her staff at the Tuwape Tumaini Children's Foundation take care of the programmes and ensure that the donations from Germany are used responsibly and fairly. We regularly discuss the use of the funds. Lucy also welcomes and accommodates our volunteers on site.
