Kenya has been experiencing heavy rainfall for several weeks now. Many rivers are bursting their banks and dams are breaking. This results in many floods and bridges are washed away. At least 300 people have died as a result of these storms and 300,000 people have been displaced. In Nairobi, the floods particularly affected poor people who had built their tin houses close to the river banks.
The start of school has been postponed until next week as many schools have been destroyed or are being used as emergency shelters.
Fortunately, we have been largely spared in Gathiga and Gilgil and all the children and staff are safe. We hope that the rain will subside and that all pupils will soon be able to return to school safely.
